Valerie and her daughter, Kristen, attended a Mother/Daughter doll-making workshop at Hartford Seminary  back in 2005. This is her story...

"My daughter Kristin, a junior in high school, received a $300 speeding ticket for, well, speeding.  Her father and I were recently divorced and Kristin had become cold and hostile to me. When I saw Hartford Seminary's ad for a Mother/Daughter doll-making workshop, I thought to myself how nice it would be to do something like that with Kristin.  Inspired, I offered to pay Kristin's speeding ticket if she would attend this workshop with me. Reluctantly, she agreed. We went to the workshop - and had a ball!  We made dolls for each other and throughout the course of the event, we talked and she really softened up toward me. Every sequin I added to her doll was a message from me to her of my huge love for her. And she 'got it' - and responded.  I still consider that workshop to have been a breakthrough point for us in terms of our relationship. And three years later, she still keeps the doll I made for her next to her bed on her nightstand."

For her words of inspiration...

Elysia Bates' has won our 2007 contest in connection with the "Prayer Doll" in production. She will receive the book, Little Ways to Say You Care. Elysia shared the following special words from George Carlin: "Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away."

Congratulations, Elysia!
